Free film archive of solidarity and struggle!

We believe liberatory media should be as free as the future we struggle toward. We’ll do our best to collectively update and maintain the library and catalog. For now the catalog is updated monthly, but films are added regularly.

If you would like to help with programming, organizing, or expanding our library, please email us at info@solidaritycinema.com.

DOWNLOAD ACCESS TO OUR ARCHIVE OF 8000+ FILMS BY SIGNING UP FOR OUR LIST: groups.google.com/g/solidarity-cinema/

FREE THE ARCHIVES!

FREE THE ARCHIVES!

Once you sign up for our list you will have access in your google drive to our full library in a shared drive. To join, click “join group” after logging into your google account (access, for now, requires a google account—you can opt out of our occasional emails, but will miss out on informative updates!). To see the drive, after joining, click on the Shared drives tab to the left of your google drive—if “Solidarity Cinema” isn’t there, click “Hidden shared drives,” right-click the “Solidarity Cinema” drive and select “Unhide shared drive.” This will not effect your google drive storage quota.

Stream our library

You can stream our entire catalog via Plex!

DOWNLOAD THE APP
Plex works best if you download the app (DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE MEDIA SERVER VERSION). Choose the app version (“Plex for”, not “Plex Media Server for”).

Adjust the quality settings
(Settings / Quality / Video quality — change this to maximum!). If your connection struggles on any particular video you can reduce the quality, but please make this your default!

Adding to our library

Are you an artist that wants to see your work in our archive? Or do you have a collection of films that we’re missing? For now the best way to add films to our library is to send a list of films that you want to add to info@solidaritycinema.com, with title and year (and if you want to be really helpful, TMBD id #). Additionally, give a sentence for why each film is a good fit for the archive, and give us an idea for what kinds of files you have (maybe include a few file sizes of films you want to add so we can compare and see if we might not have access to better quality files).

As for what fits the archive, we prioritize films made by leftists and the marginalized, and films that depict solidarity and struggle.

Requests and file issues!

If you have requests for additions to our radical film archive, please make the request on our discord on the #archive-requests channel, using the /request film command. Then please add a sentence on why the request is a good fit for our radical film archive. Alternatively you can email requests to info@solidaritycinema.com.

We archive leftist, Black, Indigenous, feminist, queer, and radical films.

Having issues streaming or downloading?

See if the solution is below! Otherwise you can reach us at info@solidaritycinema.com!

It says I need access to the “Films” folder (bit.ly/solidarityfolder).

Make sure you’re signed up for the list (groups.google.com/g/solidarity-cinema/). Then go to drive.google.com and click on Shared Drives on the left. If the Solidarity Cinema drive isn’t there, click “Hidden shared drives,” right-click the “Solidarity Cinema” drive and select “Unhide shared drive.”

Plex keeps buffering though my internet speed is good.

Are you using the Plex app? Did you update your quality settings to “original”?

Google Drive says “Download quota exceeded for this file, so you can’t download it at this time” or keeps having issues with downloading failing.

There is a workaround! You can download films by downloading the *folder of the film* in the shared drive:

  1. make sure you’re logged into the google account you signed up for the solidarity cinema list with

  2. find the *folder of the film*

    • search for the film in your google drive (you have to press enter after searching—it often wont show up in the auto populated results)

    • or go to the solidarity cinema shared drive

      • bit.ly/solidarityfolder is a direct link to the films folder. (YOU CAN ONLY SEE THIS FOLDER IF YOU HAVE JOINED THE LIST. PLEASE DO NOT REQUEST ACCESS TO THIS FOLDER OR SHARE WITH FRIENDS WHO HAVEN’T JOINED<3).

  3. download the *folder of the film*

    • right click the folder you want to download, select download

    • or if you are within the folder of the film you want to download (and can see the film file and any additional subtitle files)

      • click the folder title in the file path under the top search bar (Solidarity Cinema > Films > *film folder*), select download

    • If you get a “Failed - Network error” just try downloading again

  4. unzip and watch the film

    • use an app like VLC or IINA to watch <3!

Screenings

We’re focusing on expanding the archive for now. If you would be interesting in programming with us though, feel free to either just use our archive or reach out directly at info@solidaritycinema.com.

If you are in Chicago or New York, we would love to partner with you on a screening, depending on availability and fit <3. We also have equipment (a generator, a screen, a frame, a projector, and a large wireless PA) that we are glad to lend and train on how to use.
